Voter ID

I know I am getting this out late but I have been busy catching up. On November 4th as I entered a Seattle voting place I asked if they needed to see my ID. The lady that I talked to told me that would not be necessary, just my voter registration card would do. I told asked her how could she know I was the one named on the card? she answered me by shrugging her shoulders and said she did not care. I was stund. It seems that in the state of Washington there is no need to show that you are a legal resident to be allowed to vote. Now I know that Washington especially King, Peirce and Snohomish counties are as liberal as any other place you can name. Up here if you think for yourself be prepared to put up with a lot of static. But I digress, what I have a problem with is that if you do not have to prove your citizenship, how can they  let you vote in a national election? If anyone can give me a coherent answer please let me know, because this really does not make any sense to me. I mean I could have lost that voter card and anyone could have picked it up.
